Both are doctorates, and both give you the title “Doctor”. But the purpose of each is different, and choosing the wrong road can cost you years, money and sometimes a job opportunity.
PhD: Doctor of Philosophy
Its purpose is a new contribution to theoretical knowledge. It starts from a gap in published research and ends with a contribution that adds to theory in your field. Most graduates go on to university teaching and research, and it usually takes three to five years, longer part-time.
DBA: Doctor of Business Administration
A professional doctorate for leaders and managers with long experience. It starts from a real problem in practice, uses scientific research to solve it, and ends with a contribution to both practice and knowledge. It is usually designed for people working full time, and includes taught modules before the research stage.
The key differences
- Starting point: the PhD starts from a question in theory, the DBA from a problem in reality.
- Students: the PhD admits researchers early in their careers; the DBA usually requires long management experience.
- After graduation: the PhD leads more naturally to an academic career; the DBA to leadership, consulting and teaching applied courses.
- Mode of study: the DBA is usually flexible for working people; the PhD often needs more full-time commitment.
What to know in the Arab world
- The title is not the goal: in our culture the title “Doctor” carries great social standing, which pushes some people to choose the fastest programme rather than the most suitable. Ask yourself first what you will do with the degree.
- Academic jobs: many universities in the region, especially when hiring for teaching and research posts, look closely at publications, the type of doctorate and the mode of study. If university teaching is your goal, check the requirements of the universities you are targeting before you choose.
- Recognition: in Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Education sets equivalency rules covering the mode of study, attendance and a period of residence in the country of study. In Egypt, the Supreme Council of Universities handles equivalency. Fully distance-learning programmes may not be recognised.
How to choose
If your goal is an academic career and publishing in scholarly journals, the PhD is the clearer road. If your goal is to lead with greater depth and solve the problems of your organisation or sector with a scientific method, the DBA is designed for you. Either way, check the university’s accreditation, the supervisors’ expertise in your topic, publication requirements before the viva, and whether the degree will be recognised in the country where you will work.
A doctorate is not a title added to your name. It is years of research, and it deserves to point in the direction you really want.

Yes. It is a professional doctorate awarded by recognised universities and carries the title Doctor. But its acceptance for some academic jobs, and its recognition, vary by university, country and mode of study.
Are distance-learning doctorates recognised in Saudi Arabia and Egypt?
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education has rules on mode of study and attendance, and fully distance-learning programmes may not be recognised. In Egypt, the Supreme Council of Universities handles equivalency. Check before you enrol.
